Sonic and the Secret Rings
« on: February 27, 2007, 10:06:30 pm »
It is a paragon of Sonic gaming. Such a worthy title has not been had since Sonic Adventure. And why? Well...

1) You only play as Sonic.
2) There is no slowdown for fucking Chao, shooting, or emerald hunting.
3) You only play as Sonic.
4) No fucking Shadow.
5) No fucking Silver
7) You only play as Sonic.
8) Sonic's abilities in the game are just too cool, and it plays magnificently with the Wiimote.
9) No fucking Shadow.
10) You only play as Sonic.

This is the truth. Rejoice in it.

Are you saying its redeeming the Sonic series for the debacle that is (the new) Sonic the Hedgehog?  I am generally a Sonic series fan but the STH game I got with my Xbox360 is quite possibly the worst game I've bought in 10 years or more (on par with Warioworld.)   I have serious doubts it was playtested by anyone outside of Sega, becuase the control is horrible, the story (from what little I got to see) sucked, and it is way too easy to die (took me about 30 tries to clear act 1)

Secret Rings intrigues me, but I really have to question the quality of a game that got second billing in the development department to the new and horrible Sonic the Hedgehog for 360 and PS3.

YES! Yes, I am! The glory is returning to shine upon us all!

Also, the rest of your post does not surprise me. The general consensus on StH is that it's pretty, but not functional.

For anyone that's interested, Best Buy's advertising this for $19.99 on its Black Friday sale.  I'll be picking up a copy myself.

Of course, this means my opinion of ROMate is now linked to the accuracy of his glowing appraisal of Secret Rings.

ROMate was close on his appraisal, but not quite close enough to earn himself a cookie.  I have a beef with #8 - the control is a little wacky - press and hold 2 to jump higher doesn't jump any higher half the time and there seems to be a split second delay between when you press it and when he jumps.  And if you're not at the same height or higher than an enemy you can't attack it.

Since I've also been playing Super Mario Galaxy, I kept thinking how the Secret Rings controls would be better if the remote was vertical, like Galaxy's ball rolling: tilt left or right to turn, tilt forward to move and press the A button to jump.  Moving the entire remote forward toward the screen is an awkward move.  I've noticed newer games have tried to minimize this action but Secret Rings requires it all the time to attack.

At least its playable though and for $20 it isn't bad.

As much as SM64 and the tolerable stages of Sunshine.  So far its proven to be quite a bit easier (but no less fun) than 64 - which makes it leaps and bounds easier than Sunshine.  Of the 54 possible stars I could have collected from the stages I've played so far, I've collected 52.  That would equate to an astounding first run ratio in SM64 and near godlike for Sunshine.  It has challenging parts sure, but they're not absurd like the pipe worlds of Sunshine.
Well worth the $50 if you own a Wii.  My only complaint is that I wish Mario was static on the center bottom of the screen and the environment rotated around him, instead of vice versa.  Its disorienting to get turned upside down or be walking toward the player instead of away from - doubly so when you have to stomp on or avoid something that hasn't come into the screen yet.  You get mostly used to it after a while, but not entirely.
