Final Fantasy VII Love/Hate Thread
« on: August 20, 2007, 01:27:11 pm »
This was brought up in another topic, and I figure it's actually a good thing to talk about.

Now, before I am called a hater for not "really knowing the game" here are my FF7 Hater Credentials. In ImportGamer13's favourite style.

1. I bought the game the week it came out
2. I rolled the clock on it, beat it with all level 99 characters, all level 4 Limit Breaks, no cheats, all hidden materia and chocobos, 4 complete sets of Master Materia, All weapons beaten, All ultimate weapons, etc.
3. Back before my hand injury, I also drew hentai of Tifa's boobs.
4. I have completed an Initial Equip, Low Level, No Materia, No Accessories Run
5. I wrote a goddamn FAQ.

Now then, to business, I loved the game when it came out, but soon realised that something was wrong, the characters lacked the depth and personality of previous games...things seemed really forced in the storyline, the villains backstory was really lame, and the last boss fight was anti-climactic and easy, the only challenge "Safer Sephiroth" ever gave me was when I fought him at level 28 with a fucking buster sword.

This thread is for you to say your peace about Final Fantasy VII, your pros and cons, you favourite and least favourite aspects of the game, and stuff.

A Note. This is not a thread about what FF Girl is hottest, we know Tifa is hot, save it. This thread she is for the speaking of discussion not epic bewbs. kthnx.

I've said some of mine already, whats your say Congress?

lol FF7 made me go crazy cuz it was the first FF in 3D xD I remember loving the cut-sceness.But your right, there was soemthing missing...
Good= characthers design, story is'nt bad )well most part)  mini games(arcades)all the secrets, ganme itself is just fun to play.

Bad= Yeah lack of personality,Cloud is nice but, mostly cuz he' cool looking with a moto and a big sword, hard to love him cuz of his personality. The story is confusing(gotta admit in my case I don't speak english at 100% so lol)I dunno, something was missing can't tell what but there was...and finally,I prefer older FF yay xD FF6 FTW

Gameplay: pretty good. Tons of mini-games. Materia system adds a lot of variety to fighting styles and a ton of fun to screw around with. A little on the easier side difficulty-wise, though not surprising, since it IS FF and not Megami Tensei (the main series, not stuff like Persona).

Story: Crap. Only memorable parts are the character appearences and maybe a few cut-scenes. And maybe Cid's profuse swearing (which doesn't get much light after he's recruited).

Yeah, really, Cid became Catholic or something after he joined your party. Barely a "MOTHERFUCKER DRINK YOUR GODDAMN TEA" out of him.

It quickly dwindled to the point where the only thing I really enjoyed was breaking the game with Materia. More than W-Summon Knights of the Round or Limit Break -> Mime, I'm talking shit where you win without ever pressing any buttons. Then I quit and went and played something worth my time.

Bravery is better than a faint heart for a man seeking to put his nose out of doors. My fate and the number of my days has already been decided.

So I pop it in the day I get it, and these polygonal figures jump off a train and I think, "Hey this is kinda cool!"

Then I spend the next seven or eight hours of game time in the same damned city, never seeing the light of day.  And once I get out, its another 30 hours or so before I can get back in, spending all that time going form place to place without ever accomplishing much other than learning there's something called Jenova that might be controlling Sephiroth.  Oh, and Barrett can't keep a train from leveling his hovel of a hometown.

FF7's greatest flaw is a terribly uncomplex plot (just follow Sephiroth around the world and hope something good happens along the way) that stretches out about 30-40 hours longer than it needs to.  The simplicity of it could have been compressed into 5-10 hours of gameplay and given you exactly the same game experience.  Quite a let down after the masterpieces of 4, 5, and 6.  4 is half as long as 7 and packs many times more story into its experience.

Case in point: the Yuffie-steals-the-materia sidequest. This detour takes 10 times as long as it should and doesn't add anything significant to the story other than to show that Yuffie isn't all bad.  And it happens at such a critical part of the story it just derails the only momentum the game has for any extended period of time just prior to this event (from Nifleheim to the Canyon and then up to meeting Cid)

Plus, I don't see what the big whoop is about Aeris dying...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

FF8 wanders all over the place without much of a focused plot, too.  But not as badly as FF7.  Plus ending is much more enjoyable (and one of my all time favorites)

The whole Square-Enix thing is one of life's greatest mysteries.  Its like a tennis match.

Enix releases Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior).  A year later, Square one-ups them with Final Fantasy.  Point for Square.
Enix follows with the much better DQ2.  Square first learns how to waste talent and money with the abysmal FF2.  Point for Enix.
Enix brings us a solid but not great DQ3.  Square does better with FF3 but can't recapture the magic of FF1.  Point for Enix.
Enix raises the bar with the absolutely exceptional DQ4.  Square digs out of their hole with the equally impressive FF4.  Draw.
Enix disappears from the international market (releasing DQ5 and DQ6 along the way) while Square rolls out consecutive winners in FF5, Secret of Mana, FF6, and Chrono Trigger.  Point for Square.
Enix still languishes in relative obscurity while Square drops FF7.  RPG newbies are awed while veterans are just aww.  Enix faults.
Enix still MIA when Square pushes out FF8.  Enix double faults.  Undeserved point for Square.
Square and Enix merge into SquareEnix about this time.
Enix-side finally gets back in the US market with DQ7, but parent company blows it by releasing FF9 within 10 days.  I can't give a point for bad management.
Nothing happens on the former Enix front while Square brings along FF10 (plus one point), FF11 (minus one point), and FF10-2 (no points)
Enix side finally finds a winner in DQ8 while Square missteps again with FF12.  Point for the Enix-brand.

So who wins?  Looks like a draw.  However, the only times the two series went head to head on consoles, Square won handily once (FF1 vs DQ1), a draw occured (DQ4 vs FF4), SquareEnix management cut the legs out from under the DQ brand (DQ7 vs FF9), and the Enix series was clearly superior once (DQ8 vs FF12)  I say that's even.  But keep this in mind: so far, every Dragon Quest game been exceptional (discounting DQ1 but at least it was a genre-innovator).  Square, and especially the Final Fantasy brand, barring a peak in the early-to-mid-90s (all SNES games) has seen as many misses as hits and picked up brownie points merely by being the only girl at the dance.

Given a choice between a Dragon Quest 9 and a Final Fantasy 13, give me DQ9.  It's much more likely to be worth the time and money.

DQ 7 came out a while before the Square-Enix merger ever happened.

Also: you failed to mention any of Enix's other awesome releases besides the DQ games but acknowledged more than just FF for Square. wut?

That's Tri-Ace. If only cause it has the Iseria Queen (Ethreal Queen) and Gabrial Celesta [two staple, optional bosses that're in the optional dungeon, which is often a gigantic marathon dungeon; Seraphic Gate for Valkyrie Profile).

...

Some checking: Developed by Tri-Ace, released by Enix.

Also: the main fault in the FF series is that they're reusing the same concept waaaay too much (IE save the world from evil). Unfortunetely: that's pretty much the whole premise of Final Fantasy (and it's pretty much the only motivation for the plot; the plot revolves mostly around "saving the world" rather than character development.
