Bold insane idea concerning PC-98 games
« on: October 29, 2007, 10:35:28 pm »
I just got done reading Hyperguy's article (http://hyperguy.net/?p=20) and I gotta admit I share the same feelings concerning those old hentai games.  I can't quite place it, but something about the older graphics, retro charm just beats out the new 3d games with (un)realistic bouncing breasts and full motion movement.

One person downloading from that site, one game after the other will take a while, but what if we pooled our efforts?  A group of people, divide up the sections for each person to do, and they spend some time doing their piece-mail of it.  Once thats done, torrent to each other via some public tracker?

Maybe its just a pipedream, but perhaps its possible to start amassing a collection of these old games.  I got a 5gig file of them I got some time ago I can throw up on piratebay to kick start this if there's any interest.

http://pc98.acheronx.com/main.html Also this guy has some games he rotates everyone so often, I asked him once about a torrent, but sadly he never responded.

Some while ago, I asked that same guy about listing some of the pre-Sogna games he's never listed (like Brocken) and gave him some additional info about the Sogna games to add to his site to try to get him to do it.  He never responded either, nor did he ever seem to make use of my information.

Still looking to acquire Brocken and the original Guynarock (not on his site) by the way.

I think it's how back then creators were challenged to cram as much detail as possible into an extremely limited medium, therefore you had less crappy CG(or in the case of some games, nothing but crappy CG).  Not to mention, pixels have always been charming.  It's part of the reason why people still love 2D games today, despite a market saturated with 3D ones.

I'm all for it so long as I'm not stuck downloading the strategy games + American PC ports(lol @ Carmen Sandiego, Alone in the Dark, and Civilization).

I'm interested.  I'm curious.  5 gigs sounds like it'd be the entire PC98 game collection.

At least someone is onboard :)  I figured sort by alphabet or something, but we can figure that out if this project ever gets off the ground.

Got a public tracker or something I can upload it too? (granted my upload isn't the best)  Or you can get it from the original hongfire thread I got it from http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59190 if needed, I can help reseed.

They got the full list there, as far as I know, its not even close to the full collection of PC98 games, let alone those of porn variety.

I didn't read anything in this thread, but I think you should feel bad on principle, so I voted.

There's 91 pages of PC98 roms at emumax.com.  What we could do is download all of the roms on one page, archive them in a .rar file, upload it to megaupload and post them here in this thread.  It'd take a while to get them all, especially considering the slow download speed, but it's definitely doable.  Actually, I think I might be able to setup my download program to periodically download files from the site during the day to make the process that much faster.

For trackerless torrenting, Azureus can be used since it has decentralized torrenting.  Otherwise, the usual suspects would do (Hongfire, Deadfrog, or in a pinch, those jerks at DeltaAnime Shibuyusha).  I'm currently download off of the torrent in that thread.  Yeah, it's games list is missing several titles.

Sounds like a good plan, I guess so far since its just us, want to split this off via odds and even pages?

Also whenever I try to go to emumax lately, I get a download option for something called octet-stream and no page loads.  Any clue what thats about?

If you can set something like this up, do tell.  It would make things so much easier to have a couple computers on auto, rather then doing it manually.

I don't know about Hongfire, they seem to have some odd rules concerning PC-98.  One of the mods made a fuss in that thread for some reason.  But good to know about the others, if worse comes to worse, I will just get a copy of aureurus or do it through megaupload.

That would indicate a raw binary file or one not recognized by your system's MIME type mapper.  Most likely its in a compression format not supported on your system.  Find out the extension on the file then google for a decompression program that handles it.

Sounds good to me.  There's 91 pages so we can split it off by doing 45 pages each.  Actually, since the pages take a while to load, could we split it off as the upper half of 90 and the lower half?  Like 1-45 and 46-91?  I think that might save a little time.

Also whenever I try to go to emumax lately, I get a download option for something called octet-stream and no page loads.  Any clue what thats about?
That happens to me too, but only if I go to emumax.com.  If I go to www.emumax.com, then it'll take me straight to their main page.  It looks like connecting to their default web folder links you to some random file.

If you can set something like this up, do tell.  It would make things so much easier to have a couple computers on auto, rather then doing it manually.
I tested it out and it looks like you can setup scheduled downloads with Free Download Manager.  You just have to feed the program the download link and there's an option for telling it when to download.  The only real downside is that you have to copy and paste the links from the pages as if you were downloading them, though on the bright side it'd allow you to download roms away from your computer at set intervals.

Why do you guys want to download all the games? You aren't going to play them all, are you doing this just to make it easier for other people to get them?

Personally I want to go through them all, play some, and rip as much CG from 'em as I can.

That, and yes, to make them easier for people to acquire.

Actually...

That's similar to the reason why I started up that Viper fansite that eventually became this forum all those years ago.  There weren't any websites on the web about Viper on English internets at the time.

Right now there's little information on and even less ways of acquiring PC98 games, and this is one small step towards changing that.  Why?

Because I like the few PC98 games I've played, even though I can't understand all of the words. ^_^;

That's kind of like me with Langrisser 2 for Genesis.  'Bout time some schlock got around to making a website based around translating the game so I could enjoy its hidden, untranslatable goodness.

I'd like to be able to try the grand majority of them.  Sure, alot of them probably suck, but I'm willing to bet that there are some damn good games in there.

Also as Hyperguy said, no one else seems to have them, this is a small step to making it possible for it to be more accessible to more people.

Any plans on how to go about this Hyperguy?

We split up the number of pages to download from and setup download queqes using Free Download Manager.  Then we let the program do the rest.  It should only take a few days to download 'em all if we automate the process.

Sounds good to me, just need to clear up the space, get the free download manager and access the emu page and I'm good to go.  I will get to work on that tomorrow after my classes.
