Touhou
« on: November 23, 2007, 09:43:07 pm »
So, anyone here know and play the Touhou game series

If you dont know about it, check this on what its about and what it is

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touhou

I'v only ben playing it for a few weeks now and started with the game Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil
During the first stage, it was like:''Yeah, this game is pretty cool. Seems like a good game''

At the boss of the first stage:''Jesus christ, the bullets shoot bullets which shoot bullets which launch missiles which shoot cannonballs and magic blasts''

At 5th Stage:''IT'S OVER NINETHOUSAAAAAAAND!!

But seriously, i really like it so far, especially when the enemy bullet rains become insane

I'm an avid Touhou fan, Imperishable Night is the best game in the series IMO.

The games are genuinely awesome, I love them like a milkshake.

I started last week, also with EoSD. Managed to beat Normal without using continues earlier today. Tried beating Extra Stage but the boss raped me numerous times.

What really bothers me though is that whenever I'm doing great I start to get nervous, and then I die, and get mad, and die again, and punch the screen... u.u

Extra Stage is a bitch, but you'll get it, just practice the spell cards until you get them down best as you can. And memorize the bosses patterns as best as you can, I know it is hard but you'll get it eventually.

If you downloaded Imperishable Night, you'll find some of the spell cards already unlocked for testing, including all of the extra stage boss cards.

Xu Fus Dimension is probably the hardest one she has. GOOD LUCK!

I do.

Really, most of the game(s) boils down to muscle memory (and plain memory) and keeping your cool. I used to die a freaking ton against Flandre's "Maze of Love" (the clock/counter-clock bullet spin) until my fingers got used to the timing. After a while, your brain gets what to do, although there's enough variation to have to actually keep your eyes out.

Also take note: the bullet patterns get a LOT more complicated from Perfect Cherry Blossom and on. Probably 'cause of the see-able hitbox (which is a major help).

And Lunatic mode really isn't kidding about the name. It's crazy. Potentially harder than the Extra stages.

BTW Flandre Scarlet's theme (U.N. Owen was her?) is probably the best boss theme in the series, IMHO. Fits her personality and it's very fun to listen to.

Quite amazing work for a one-manned series.

I've heard of Touhou in three different places.

On 4chan, where there was a torrent of games a while back, in doujinshi, as there are quite a few Touhou doujinshi that I passed up, and on Emumax, as there are a few Touhou games for the PC98 system too.

So what does touhou mean in nihongo?

It actually means "Eastern" or "Orient"

The reason the games of Team Shanghai Alice became widely known as "the Touhou series" was probably because every single title of their games started with the kanji for Touhou (東方).

I know you're disappointed - I always thought it was referring to something involving foot fetish porn actresses.

Not really, I just literally wanted to know what touhou meant, because I had a flashback to japanese class when on the final exam touhou or something using the same kanji was a straight translation question, and I totally fucking bombed it.

I did not perform very well on that kanji exam.  Nope.

Perhaps this would be a good thread to supply a link:

It's just something I made out of boredom, really. I am working on a Lunatic play-through of Perfect Cherry but I'm not sure when those vids will be ready.

I still haven't picked up the PC98 versions... ^_^;

I'd like to work my way up from the first games in the series to the later ones.  Any ones I should avoid?

Well, the very first Touhou game for PC 98 is quite different from the vertical danmaku games

(From the Touhou Wiki page)
Highly Responsive to Prayers is unique within the Touhou series. Rather than being a Danmaku shooting game, it plays similar to Arkanoid, but allows the player a much greater variety of abilities, including multiple ways to influence the movement of the ball. Highly Responsive to Prayers could be considered a Danmaku puzzle game.

There are 4 levels of difficulty: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Lunatic. Each difficulty level features differences in the number of bullets fired by enemies, rate of fire, variations in the bullets' pattern of movement, and chiefly, the difficulty of boss encounters. When playing on the Easy difficulty, stage enemies will not fire bullets. On Lunatic, each overturned card fires a single bullet at Reimu's position.

The player will traverse 20 increasingly harrowing stages through the course of a regular game. Boss encounters occur every five levels, or at Stages 5, 10, 15, and 20. After completing Stage 5, the player is offered a choice between two distinct routes to follow for the remainder of the game: the Demon World (Makai) Route, or the Hell (Jigoku) Route. Each features different stages and boss encounters, as well as different ending sequences.
