Connection Difficulties
« on: January 21, 2008, 10:04:56 pm »
I've been having intermittant connection problems with my DSL line the last few days, and they're going to continue for at least a few more until a new modem arrives from AT&T.  If you're trying to access material from one of my sites, such as the VIPER Thumbnail Theater, or come across posts of mine where the images don't appear or the links don't work, please understand and bear with me until the issue is resolved.

ATnT lets you host a server on your connection?

Man I use Optimum online and they are mother fucking homos when it comes to home servers.  Fucking queerduckfags.

Yes. I know of no clauses in the service agreement that states otherwise, assuming you're not doing anything illegal with the bandwidth they're providing (such as hosting mp3s, movies and other copyrighted material), which is expressly forbidden by the terms of the agreement.

Actually, I've been hosting website(s) through my DSL connection for about 4 years now.  And at 512kbps upstream I blow Hyperguy's bandwidth out of the water with a theoretical maximum of ~1.35 terabits/month. (I'm probably closer to a physical maximum of 1Tb but I obviously utilize no where near that.)  On the other hand, Hyperguy probably gets more than 512 kbps upstream on hyperguy.net.  He can probably offer more content at any given time, but his usage is capped monthly whereas mine has no cap.

The power company here plans to begin offering fiber service later this year.  I've been told the downstream will be 100 mbps and upstream will be in the neighborhood of 20 mbps.  And it's not supposed to cost any more than the 6.0 mbps down/512 kbps up options from Comcast cable ($49.95/month) or AT&T DSL ($45.95/month).  Fear me when that day arrives.

Opt Online is notorious for randomly capping their users.  No mention of capping exists in the service agreement, and sometimes when you call up their service and ask why you're being capped, the customer service reps will flat out tell you're not being capped.  No matter how many speed tests you're running at the time, they'll come up with some excuse.

The power company here plans to begin offering fiber service later this year.

Fuck I hate you now >=(

Optimum needs to rethink their user agreements. They don't provide a lot of freedom for your use.

They provide very little.  Even their business service, which is basically just their normal, slow service combined with the allowance of running your own server, actually caps the poor business servers every now and then even if they're nowhere near their bandwidth limit.

filthy oo U_U

unfortunately they're the only cable providers around town and verizon's dsl is like 2-3x as expensive for equivalent dsl speeds >.>

My service should now be restored.  Took an extra week becuase the dumbass at AT&T who said he was going to ship out a new modem last Monday never placed an order for me.  Called Monday evening to ask for status update and they had no record of it, so my replacement didn't get shipped until yesterday.  It seems to be working fine right now.  Averaging 5.8 Mbps downstream and 484.7 Kbps upstream  (that's 1.25 terabits/month, or 157 gigabytes/month - take that Hyperguy!)
