a review of

a set of headphones celebrating the 30th anniversary of space invaders

a game by taito

published by square-enix for the nintendo ds, playstation portable, and xbox 360 (with the unfortunate news that jeff minter would be designing the backgrounds)

review by james corbett

**** stars (out of a possible ****)

For those of you who forgot amongst the holiday rush of blockbuster games, Space Invaders Extreme was released earlier this year here in America. It was a great game that took its source material (Space Invaders) and made it relevant in this modern day and age of the bullet hell shooter. It was a remake not totally unlike Pac-Man Championship Edition or Galaga Legions.

I am not here to discuss these games. Rather, a piece of merchandise to promote the game, and to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary. Much like another review I did elsewhere, the question is: how good is this thing?

The answer is very good! After a slight adjustment period (getting used to these massive things on my head) of about two hours on an early Sunday morning while at work, they became a comfortable vestigial limb for my head, much like a hat. The sound on these things are amazing, comparable to set of Sony studio headphones I picked up for twenty (20) dollars American at work last year. And unlike those headphones, I don't have a massive fucking cord going from my head to somewhere around my Achilles' Tendon.

Highest Possible Recommendation.

I had a couple of images of myself wearing the headphones, but they didn't turn out so well, so pretend I'm wearing them in this picture (taken for my MySpace profile, hence the MySpace angle):
