I just had no desire to play a character with no desire for anything human.  I couldn't manage to sit through it until he became supposedly mildly likeable.  I never saw any of the VIII characters as any more fleshed out than VII, just designed differently.  I've personally never found anything all that great about FF.

Now, give me a good Suikoden game anyday.  I did say good Suikoden game; IV was the FFVIII of Suikoden.

Ironically enough I don't care for Suikoden. lol

However, what's your opinion on the Star Ocean series? I thought that was very very good.

Better read my post again Bill. I stated 4 > 6, not the other way around. I'll give 6 the better story, but 4 had better characters, better balance, and a much badder, tougher villian.  Kefka's a maniac that is way too easy to beat (not to mention that no one can tolerate his laugh in SPC700 PCM)  Zeromus can flatten your ass over and over with Black Hole.

By the way, 5 was ok, but it takes way too long to get your characters the 4X skill. 4 & 6 are still both better.

Unfortunately, I've never played Star Ocean.  With such limited time to play games, I tend to play with my wife, and she prefers games with prominent female characters (preferably playable).  How does Star Ocean measure up in that respect?

There's no multiplayer, but you can control any character in your party. Tales of Symphonia (for the Gamecube) has multiplayer and an equal amount of male and female characters.

ToS aint bad either.  Too many religious overtones and a weak ending though.  But if she likes, you can use a party of nothing but female characters (all four) starting around mid-way through the game (about 30 hours into it, as its about 75-80 in length), plus its multiplayer (two players can control one character each, and AI controls the other two characters [the battles are realtime]).

Or if she likes single player, turn-based RPGs, go for Skies of Arcadia Legends.  Of the three major characters, two are female.  Plus its the finest RPG ever made, but not for that reason.

Both are only $20 now, too. Can't go wrong with those in the Christmas booty.

FFVII was good in my opinion, but it was NO Number 1 game. By any means.

If you're going to make a Final Fantasy Number One, it should be Final Fantasy VI. To put VII above VI is blasphemy.

Wow... it really does my heart good to see someone else say that. That was the first game that ever had any real emotional impact on me storywise. Truely epic, particularly if you were one of the people playing it when it first came out. I was about 17-18 when it came out, and I had starwars on the back of my mind, cuz it made me feel like those movies did way back when i was only 5. Kefka was great, he wasn't some whiny ass villan that was just pissed off at the world, he aimed right for the top... become god. And he did. Ok, he was kinda whiny, but he was a nutter, so you gotta leave room for that.

I also gotta give props to the first and original. When it first came out there was nothing else like it, and i have some fond memories playing it endlessly, pulling all nighters with buddies, and always fearing that evil swamp cave. Fucks sake, did i ever hate that dungeon...

I loved all the FF games. Guess you could say I'm a fanboy, pure and simple... but playing through FF-X, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I thought it was a great game, just something didn't sit right with me, and I've never put my finger on it. The world deffently felt smaller though, I can say that much.

There's easily better RPG's out there other than the FF games, but yeah, again FFVI is by far my favorite also. It's the only FF I've gone back to, and completely beaten 3 times by now.

Other RPG's I'd say I like more than the FF's, would be:
Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger / Cross, Breath of Fire IV, Suikoden II, and maybe Star Ocean II. I've just kind of started playing that one, but haven't gotten too far yet, the battle system is amazing though.

Chrono Trigger was a great game. Mad props to my boy Magus.

Star Ocean II is really good, it'll take you forever to get everything, and there's all sorts of interesting things in that game to find, if you enjoy it I HIGHLY recommend Star Ocean :Until the End of Time, it totally pwns all of the recent Final Fantasy efforts by a landslide.

Bluelyth rocks, post more.

Well.... the Japanese version of ToS is PS2.  Nintendo helped pay for the internationalization and got exclusive NA/Europe rights for it.  The psuedo-sequel Tales of Legendia is way behind schedule as I understand it.

If you have a Dreamcast, you can pay out the nose for an old copy of SoA.  But it doesn't have as many sidequests as SoA:L, and it'll cost you a good deal more due to rarity.

The Gamecube has great multiplayer games and it's not that expensive ($70 at max, that's less than a DS). But anyway.

PS: the size tags don't work.

Out of curiousity, what was #1? Super Mario Bros 3? Ms. Pac-Man? I have a feeling they chose that rotten abomination, FFVII.

Believe it or not, it was Tetris.

Good, but far from #1. I would go back and play LoZ:LttP again. Would rather play newer puzzle games than Tetris by now (yes, I'm still a waiting a sequel to Chu Chu Rocket...)

EGM just released its 200th issue this month, and in it, they included a list for the 200 best games of their time.

Make a wild guess as to which game received the number 1 spot this time around.

Is there no love for final fantasy tactics?  I'd rank it second in the series after FFVI...
