PS2 VGA Adapter?
« on: March 05, 2006, 04:13:26 pm »
Hey all, I'm looking for a VGA Adapter so that I can hook up my PS2 (slim SCPH-7001 model if that matters) to my LCD monitor ([http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCD_Digital/RL19PSUSQ.asp]  Samsung Syncmaster-920T Silver 19"). Uhm, I'm not sure how it works, but I'm guessing you'd need the vid card too, right? I'm on an ATi Radeon 9800 PRO [128MB].

Does anyone know what I could get (quality, etc)? My computer's close to my TV screen but I'm about to revamp my room to fit in a new desk and there's only 10 days left 'til Subsistence. I want to be able to play it the second I get home.

Thanks.

You'll need an All-in-Wonder version of your card.  Then you can attach the VGA adapter that came with your PS2 into the appropriate AIW cable dongle and then you can view the game in the TV viewer window.

Keep in mind that LCD screens are not designed for rapid refreshes between light and dark areas - such as explosions in games.  Your monitor looks to be pretty good quality, but still don't expect it to look better than the TV.

All-In-Wonder?

Gwarg.

There's no other way? I'm willing to spend an extra few to get some kind of converter//splitter or whatever. I don't like All-In-Wonder. I know someone with a 6800 who was able to do it. Perhaps if I switch to nVidia?

Anyway, thanks a mil for your answer.

All In Wonder is the best bet.

But personally I'd just go down to the store and buy a nice new television. It's more cost efficient if you can believe that.

There's no other way?
Or the standalone TV Wonder product.  I've never really seen anyone use one of those though, so I dont know if its quality is on par with the AIWs or not.  I had an old AIW Rage Pro 8 years ago on my Pentium 233, then went with a Voodoo 3500 TV for my Athlon 550.  The older Rage Pro blew the socks off the supposedly top-of-the-line Voodoo3 when it came to TV.  Hence, I've gone back to ATI products again (with a Radeon 9600 now in my Athlon64 3000+)

ATI makes better stuff than NVidia by the way.  Nintendo found that out years ago on the GC and will continue to use ATI in the Revolution.  Plus, Microsoft had Nvidia on Xbox and switched to ATI for the 360.  That should tell you something.

Okay, I did some research earlier and I found that you could pretty much hook up hook any recent graphics card to the VGA box, add some cable (forgot the name) and be able to play it on the monitor -- I saw some AIW stuff and they basically just say it's a hella lot easier, since it's got a few sockets that other cards don't (hence the need to buy a couple cables).

There seems to be two types of VGA adapters -- ones that are progressive scan and others that are upscan. Progressive supposedly = better while upscan = lesser, but not all games are on progressive scan, so upscan's the way to go. When there's a bunch of junk about having the native res at 1280, and some stuff about 480p or something like that, but I was a little busy at the time, so I just stopped reading about it.

Would you guys happen to know anything about this? And thanks again for the replies.

-- ATI > NVidia. =] That's why I got a 9800 instead of a 5200. *win*

Progressive scan updates altaernate scanlines in each refresh, which tricks the eyes into seeing moving images appear more fluid with less "choppiness".  Never heard the term "upscan" but I presume it would be simulating true progressive scan by doubling the refresh rate of the incoming video stream and updating alternate lines with each vertical pass.

If you're going to run it on an LCD screen designed for computers, you'll want the highest res possible, 1280 if its not prohibitably expensive.

Alright, thanks! I'll get back to you on this when I actually get the money to buy all the parts! (ARC stick = priority)

So what's my native res? o_O

Last I checked, you don't need a video card in order to run your PS2's output to an LCD monitor.

The only case that you would need one would be if you were using it to capture, that is, use your PC to take pictures and movies of gameplay.  Also, if you were using a video card to capture, the screen's output would be limited to your computer's processing power, that is, how fast it can draw onto the screen given the resolution, meaning that you'd experience some slowdown unless you had lots of memory.

What you'd need would be a PS2 to VGA adapter. Something like to this, that connects your PS2's output directly to your monitor.
