If I try to look up the specs for this heap I'm working with now, I'll get depressed, cry, eat chocolate ice cream by the pint, and think of hurting myself. >_< This thing just blows.

Good news and bad news.  As of now, my folks say that they'll still get me a computer, but it's a matter of how soon we'll get the money to pay for it, since we're a bit short right now.  I'm planning on getting a Dell XPS 410 model with the following components:

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6600 (4MB L2 Cache,2.4GHz,1066 FSB)
Windows XP Professional
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
Dual Drives: 48x Combo + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable
256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell USB Keyboard
Dell Optical USB Mouse
13 in 1 Media Card Reader and 3.5" Floppy Drive
56K PCI Data Fax Modem
IEEE 1394 Adapter

Here's a link to the model and its features:

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_410?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

The cost for this will probably be around $1,400-$1,500, and it does not include a monitor (still gonna need to save some money towards that).  I was trying to strike a good balance between the performance I was wanting and my parent's budget.  I've also asked my relatives to only give me money for Christmas/birthday to help pay for this (as well as avoid unwanted gifts - we all know how distant relatives will often buy us the most random things sometimes...  >_<; ), so hopefully I'll be able to get it soon enough.

One of my graphic design teachers also showed me a website where students can order software and other stuff at highly discounted prices:

http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=19981033

In the above link, buying Adobe CS2 would save me around $800, but would still be rather pricey.  I've also heard that CS3 is supposed to come out in the spring.  Anyone know if/where I could pirate this without having to worry about software registation or any similar B.S.??

Dell also says it's providing a free upgrade to Windows Vista, but I know nothing about it.  I'd probably just stick with Windows XP Professional until I know exactly how good this new O.S. works, as I'm sure it'll have some bugs and stuff to work out at first.

Any info/suggestions about the above mentioned things would be greatly appreciated.

Specs?  Aren't those glasses? :P
Hey I have a computer that  works... most of the time.  It gets online, does the work I need and was lovingly hand built with mostly bootleg software by my geek little brother.  If I have issues (computer, not personal :P) then I call a family member to beg a fix.
I don't really need to know more then that a this point in life.  :bigtran

I'll be getting a laptop soon. Does anyone know if AMD Turion's any good? I'm trying to find Core Duos but none of them have any graphics (INTERNAL WTF). Only the Turion laptops do.

Sorry man, the computer I've got right now has been the only one I've ever really owned, and it's a Gateway brand.  =/  I had thought about getting a laptop for my new computer, but I decided I'd prefer better hardware over the ability to take my work wherever I need to.

Still no word yet from my folks on when they'll be able to get it for me...  I'm going home soon, so maybe I can find a job over the Christmas break to help pay for it, but I highly doubt it, especially seeing how I live in a rather small town, and most places wouldn't want to bother hiring someone for just a few weeks...  kinda makes me wish you could run around and randomly encounter a cow or something, then beat the shit out of it and somehow it'd drop $10 and a Mythril Dagger, lol...

I built a new PC for my parents for Christmas.  Their old one really was on its last legs - old, knotty, withered legs in fact - with a bad heart (irregular PSU) and worse memory (ram and/or hdd errors)
Thanks to after-Thanksgiving sales and recycling some components, I managed to build this for them for a little under $400:

AMD Sempron64 3400+
ASUS K8N-VM (PCIE based, intregated video and sound, SATA-2 connections)
Dynapower MicroATX case (had a very tough height limit of a mere 13.5" to work with, hence the small form factor)
LOGISYS 350W MicroATX power supply
NEC floppy drive
Plextor 12x DVD+/-RW (recycled from my PC when I got a dual layer drive)
160GB Western Digital SATA-2 HDD
512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200 memory with heat spreader
3com USRobotics 56k PCI Faxmodem (recycled from their old PC, since they still use dialup)
MAG 17" LCD monitor 1280x1024 max resolution
APC Back-UPS ES 500VA

Same as I posted here, except with Windows XP Media Center Edition and a beautiful 20" widescreen flat panel monitor, which alone has 4 USB ports on it.  >=P

Now if I can just get all my files and software straightened out...

Upgrade time is almost upon me!  Just received my Q6700 and motherboard bundle from the Intel retail purchase program.  Just need RAM, a new PSU and video card for it, and the ol' P4 becomes another machine in the long line of hand-me-downs  in my family.

My 200GB stopped working the other day.  It's the one that has everything on it.  When I boot up it makes 10 clicking sounds, stops, and makes 10 more clicking sounds.  I think it may be off its spindle.

I don't know what I'll do.  I think I'll try a data recovery service as soon as I'm able.  Luckily, I backed up the site's files a month prior, but otherwise, all of my other projects are toast(Except for the VN game I'm making, which had all of its files on my laptop).

Well, here's hoping that you will recover your data.
